Parents, educators, and community members gathered virtually for the Stand Up for Shaker Schools webinar — a discussion about the future of Shaker Schools and the critical importance of passing the upcoming operating levy, Issue 51.
Understanding the Levy: More Than Just Numbers
The presenters began by clarifying a common point of confusion: the difference between bond and operating levies. While bond levies fund capital projects like building renovations, the current operating levy is what keeps the district running day-to-day. It covers staff salaries, technology, classroom resources, and the programs that make Shaker Schools exceptional.
As Caitlin Johnson, one of the campaign’s co-chairs, explained, “It’s the stuff that makes the district run day to day. It’s the people that you see that you drop your kids off with. It’s all the things that you think of when you think of a school. That’s what we’re talking about here when we’re talking about the levy that’s on the ballot this fall.”
Shaker’s Strengths: Academic Excellence and Community Impact
Shaker Schools have consistently performed well on state report cards, earning four stars for the past two years. But the numbers only tell part of the story. The district’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program, available at every school, fosters critical thinking, global awareness, and inclusivity. Parents and educators shared heartfelt testimonials about how Shaker’s small class sizes, dedicated teachers, and diverse programs have shaped their children’s lives and strengthened the community.
Financial Challenges: Doing More with Less
State and federal funding have not kept pace with rising costs, and the district relies heavily on local property taxes. Inflation has driven up expenses, especially for staff salaries, which make up 80% of the budget. The district has already implemented cost-saving measures, including reducing staff through natural attrition, but more drastic cuts could be on the horizon if the levy does not pass.
Johnson also addressed the difficult environment for school funding.
“We are operating in a very hostile environment, and we don’t know what’s going to happen, and that’s really a hard situation for a school district, for a treasurer, for a board to make budgets under,” Johnson said.
What’s at Stake: The Cost of Inaction
If the operating levy fails, the district would be forced to deplete its reserves, leading to layoffs and the loss of programs that make Shaker Schools unique. The presenters emphasized that this is not a levy that can simply be postponed. Delaying would result in a permanent loss of revenue and further strain on the schools.
A Call to Action
The message from the webinar was clear: Shaker Schools are the heart of the community, and their continued excellence depends on the support of residents.
Passing Issue 51 is about more than funding — it’s about investing in the future of Shaker Heights and ensuring that every child has access to the opportunities they deserve.
Stay connected, spread the word, and let’s keep Shaker Schools strong for generations to come.
